ABOUT ME

Hey there, I’m Kieresten. I am a Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP) and Myofunctional Therapist. I got started in dentistry in 2012 as a dental technician in the Air Force National Guard. Since then I have gained experience as a dental hygiene coordinator and chair side dental assistant prior to attending dental hygiene school. After becoming a licensed dental hygienist, I have pursued additional licensure and training allowing me to bring needed services to our community as a RDHAP and myo therapist through Anderson Dental Hygiene.

In my home life I enjoy spending time with my husband and our son. We enjoy the outdoors through camping and fishing. When we are home we spend time in the kitchen cooking and baking or building with magnetic tiles.

WHAT IS A RDHAP?

A registered dental hygienist in alternative practice (RDHAP) is a dental hygienist that has obtained a specialized license allowing them to practice independently from a dentist. This license was created to bridge gaps in access to dental hygiene care to underserved populations such as those with physical and/or intellectual limitations, and those residing in rural communities with limited care options. This license is regulated by the Dental Hygiene Board of California.

WHERE CAN A RDHAP PRACTICE?

Patients with physical or intellectual disabilities that prevent them from going into a traditional dental office can receive dental hygiene care in their place of residence. A RDHAP can provide services in schools to children as well as care to patients in the hospital. Additionally, a RDHAP can establish a brick and mortar practice in areas that have been designated a dental health provider shortage area (DHPSA) by the California Primary Care Office (PCO).

WHAT SERVICES CAN A RDHAP PROVIDE?

RDHAP’s can provide all dental hygiene services to include: oral hygiene instructions including product recommendations, oral cancer screenings, periodontal assessments, cleanings, fluoride applications, x-rays, in office whitening and fabrication of custom whitening trays, and referrals to general dentists or specialists as needed.

WHAT IS REQUIRED TO RECEIVE CARE FROM A RDHAP?

A prescription for dental hygiene care from your primary care dentist or physician is required 18 months after the first visit with the RDHAP then every 2 years, or sooner as decided by the dentist or physician.

MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY

WHAT IS OMT?

Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is a combination of assessments and program based exercises that focus on correcting orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD) through habit elimination, strengthening muscles of the face, neck and tongue, and establishing optimal oral rest posture, nasal breathing and lip seal. Improving the position and strength of the tongue can lead to better breathing, sleep, and growth and development.

*Programs are tailored to individual needs based on results from a comprehensive assessment.
